Tonga Police report that 2017 was a busy year with numerous operations throughout Tonga, including controlling the chaotic Rugby World Cup celebrations. Five road deaths recorded this year is the lowest number of fatalities in over a decade. Between January and November this year, Tonga Police recorded 262 car crashes with five road fatalities - a significant drop from 18 road deaths recorded last year. Car crashes are most commonly attributed to drivers losing control, speeding, drink driving, and failing to give way or stop, police stated in urging drivers to make smart decisions on the road this summer.
