Tonga Police have released the names of three people who died after a fatal crash on Hihifo Road at 'Ahau early Saturday morning 2 July. They are Kalolaine Quick of the Heilala Holiday Lodge at Kanokupolu, Lower Leaving Ma'u from Haveluloto and an off duty policeman Scott 'Ungo'unga. His wife Vai 'Ungo'unga remains in a critical condition in Vaiola Hospital.

Eleven people, including five children, were happy to reach Tongatapu safely yesterday evening after their small boat had failed to reach its destination Fonoifua Island in the Ha'apai Group on Monday, triggering a search and rescue operation. “When it got dark we had not spotted any island, it started raining and our navigation was off route so we decided to anchor the boat, and slept overnight intending to continue our journey the next day,” said the Captain Tevita Mateaki Fonua, but the boat went adrift. A New Zealand court has indicted nine men and one woman for the kidnapping and death of a Thai woman, Jindarat Prutsiriporn in March this year. Among the accused are five Pacific Islander men: Tevita Matangi Fangupo (23), Luigi Havea (26), Panepasa Havea (25), Masi Vaifale (34) and Rogers Paleaaesina (25). A 27 year-old Tongan national Pita Manukeu has been sentenced by an Australian court to four and half years’ imprisonment for brutally assaulting and robbing a 24 year-old man in Perth last year. The victim Ajok Chol was beaten as he lay unconscious on a road, and was later rushed to hospital to undergo emergency brain surgery. Pita Manukeu has a wife and 5 year-old son in Tonga.
