Hon. Sonatane Tu‘’akinamolahi Taumoepeau-Tupou, the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence has been appointed as Tonga's new Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, the Tongan Ambassador to the United States, Chile, Cuba, Mexico, and Venezuela, and the Tongan High Commissioner to Canada.

The Government of Japan will set up an Embassy in Nuku'alofa in January 2009, the Deputy Secretary for Tonga's Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Tevita Kolo, confirmed this afternoon.

The Tonga government is investigating the cost of setting up two new Tonga Consular offices in Canberra and Wellington for possible inclusion in the new budget for 2008-09.
