Fafa Island Resort yesterday, February 4, celebrated the declaration of about 485 hectares of reef and sea area around the Island as a Special Management Area. The special protected status means that only a person or a fishing vessel that has been approved by the Coastal Community Management Committee may enter the area.

Tonga’s coral reefs in most parts are phenomenal and healthy but there are places where they are damaged, said a Chief Scientist who was concerned with the low number of large fish due to overfishing and recommended more marine protected areas with tougher fishing regulations to ensure damaged reefs recovery and bring back more fish.

The flooding in parts of Nuku'alofa is a testimony to an ad-hoc decision-making process in the urban development of Nuku'alofa, Tukua Tonga, the director of the Urban Planning Unit of the Ministry of Land, said today. Flooding during this week's heavy downfalls of rain, has closed some schools and businesses, made roads impassable, and caused community concern over the associated health risks.
