With more unseasonal heavy rain falling today in Tongatapu, homes in low lying and swamp areas in Kolomotu’a were flooded. Sio Tuiano, the Kolomotu’a Town Officer, who is concerned about the health risks of floodwaters contaminated with E.coli, said a few of the residents have taken shelter in an evacuation centre, but most people do not want to leave their homes.

The causeway at Foa in Ha’apai was closed off early this morning due to high tidal waves brought by Tropical Cyclone Winston (cat. 4) located north east of Vava'u. Evacuation centers were opened to people on the outer islands of Vava'u and Ha'apai, housing thousands of people overnight.

Police rescued a driver who was swept into the sea with his vehicle with three other men yesterday and have closed a causeway connecting Lifuka and Foa in Ha'apai today, due to high tidal waves as Tropical Cyclone Victor moves through southern Tongan waters. The men were understood to be missionaries from the Church of the Latter Day Saints in Ha'apai.

A Tsunami Marine Warning for Tonga was cancelled this morning by the Tonga Meteorological Service. A tsunami generated during earthquakes in Chile yesterday no longer poses a threat to Tonga.

Tonga remains on alert tonight during a Pacific tsunami watch, after a tsunami was generated off the coast of Chile earlier today. Tonga’s Chief Meteorological Officer ‘Ofa Fa’anunu said at 6:15pm that if the wave remains at its forecasted height of between .3 -1M as it approaches the Pacific islands, they will issue a marine warning later this evening.
