Tonga is "not happy" with Air New Zealand threatening to cut its weekly flight connecting Tonga to the USA next year, if Tonga will not pay millions in subsidies to the international carrier, Tonga's Prime Minister Hon. Dr Feleti Sevele told Matangi Tonga Online yesterday afternoon.

Her voice is Tongan and her images and stories come from today, and include several reflections on Tongan politics - her poems offering witty and perceptive, sometimes painful, insight, say Irene Webley and Tapani Mangisi, who wrote the following book review for the Tonga Research Association.

The first meeting of G20 leaders on the world economic crisis, while setting a road map that has the potential to create a new financial regulatory agenda, has nevertheless fallen short on some major areas of concern, in particular concerning the immediate fiscal boost required to tackle the looming global crisis in employment, according to the ITUC. While the Declaration issued from the Summit recognises that coordinated international action is needed, it gives little indication of how such coordinated action is to be undertaken.

The WCPFC meets this year from 7-12 December in Busan Korea. WCPFC's current members include Australia, China, Canada, Cook Islands, European Community, Federated States of Micronesia, Fiji, France, Japan, Kiribati, Korea, Republic of Marshall Islands, Nauru, New Zealand, Niue, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Chinese Taipei, Tonga, Tuvalu, United States of America and Vanuatu. Out of a total of 32 participating territories and members of WCPFC, over half (17) are Pacific Islands Forum Fisheries Agency FFA members, forming a significant voting bloc (although so far in the WCPFC's history decisions have been made by consensus).
