Ousted Member of Parliament, Mateni Tapueluelu, has successfully appealed against a declaration made by Lord Chief Justice Paulsen that resulted in him being removed from Parliament in December last year. The Court of Appeal of Tonga overturned the decision on Friday April 8.

A Tongan-American man in Utah, Nitokalisi Fonua (33) has pleaded guilty to the killing of a Tongan national Viliami Latu (34) in 2007 and to the killing of a young woman Krystal Flores (21) in 2009, both in Salt Lake City. According to Utah media reports Nitokalisi pleaded guilty to manslaughter although the charges against him are two counts of first-degree murder. He is due to be sentenced on April 18 by a Salt Lake City court.

A storm warning for Tongatapu, ‘Eua and Ha’apai was cancelled at 2:45pm this afternoon by the Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre, but strong winds may still be experienced this evening. The fast moving Tropical Cyclone Zena (Cat. 1) that was approaching Tonga from the West this morning has been downgraded from Category 2 to Category 1 by Tonga Met this afternoon.

Tropical Cyclone Zena (Cat. 2) is rapidly moving towards southern Tonga and expected to bringing destructive storm force winds this afternoon to Tongatapu, ‘Eua and Ha’apai. Forecasters expect the storm to lie about 15km south-southeast of Nuku’alofa or 25km northwest of ‘Eua at about 3:00pm today, Thursday 7 April.
