Cabinet Minister and People’s Representative to Parliament, ‘Akosita Lavulavu and her husband, ‘Etuate Lavulavu, a former Cabinet Minister were both found guilty this morning on criminal charges of obtaining over $500,000 pa'anga by false pretences. They will be sentenced on July 2. It is one of the largest fraud cases in the Tongan courts in recent years.

Kautai Moala (38) and Tevita 'Alatini (37) have been jailed for possession of methamphetamine seized in Ngele'ia on September 3, 2019. “A pre-sentence report made really appalling reading that Moala is identified in the community as a supplier of drugs and uses young boys from the community to run drugs for him,” said the Supreme Court judge.

Limoni Tito Siasau (49) was sentenced to four-years imprisonment for serious indecent assaulting a 33-year-old female worker on a yacht in Vaipua, Vava'u in 2020. "You have caused great harm and damage to the good name, honour and dignity of the complainant as a woman," said the judge.

Traditional outrigger canoes are being reborn in Tonga with a new programme, led by Master Carver, Sione Tu‘ione Pulotu, teaching innovative ways to create canoes in a day, to help revive traditional fishing methods. Fifty-eight people from Ha‘apai completed a week-long training course in building the outrigger canoes and oars at MORDI Tonga headquarters, in Tongatapu, from 24-28 May.
