As we discover this week that it is not viable for a New Zealander to invest in Tonga because of a restrictive New Zealand tax legislation, a number of questions spring to mind. It is definitely very unfair for these New Zealanders and Tongans who have made New Zealand their homes to find that investment in Tonga is made unprofitable by restrictive tax laws. The front pages of the newspapers published in Tonga this week have been dominated by stories coming from the campaign messages of the incumbent People's Representatives for Tongatapu - ‘Akilisi Pohiva, Feleti Sevele and ‘Isileli Pulu. The only exception being the government's newspaper the Kalonikali Tonga, which featured a photograph of Princess Pilolevu accepting a gift of go-carts for a new amusement park in Nuku'alofa.

Kusitafu Pohahau (38), who is currently serving a two and a half year prison sentence for possession of marijuana was sentenced to a further two years imprisonment by Chief Justice Robin Webster at the Nuku‘alofa Supreme Court, this morning, March 10.

The sentencing of Nakita Folau Tu'itavake for manslaughter that was set for today, March 9, at the Nuku'’alofa Supreme Court was adjourned by Chief Justice Robin Webster to March 31. Tu'itavake's lawyer, Laki Niu was ill and was unable to be in court.

The E. M. Jones group of companies, one of Tonga's oldest trading companies is selling out. Keith Harris of Guardian Trust, New Zealand, the legal owner of E. M. Jones Group of companies since 1981 said that they had no other option but to sell E. M. Jones Ltd.

The Tongan Privy Council on Friday March 4 approved the implementation of Tonga's new Consumption Tax. Later, in the afternoon, the Minister of Finance, Hon. Siosiua ‘Utoikamanu officially launched Tonga's Consumption Tax which will come into force on April 1.
