The ANZ Tonga bank today donated $15,000 pa’anga to the Tonga Red Cross to assist with the relief efforts in Ha’apai following the devastation left by Tropical Cyclone Ian On January 11.

One person died on LIfuka as Tropical Cyclone Ian Category 5 ripped through the Ha‘apai Islands yesterday afternoon, causing extensive devastation, although the full extent of the impact on the low lying islands is unknown in Tonga's first recorded Category 5 cyclone. In Lifuka most houses were flattened or damaged and people sheltered in the churches and other community buildings.

The Tonga team has won nine medals at the Special Olympics 2013 Asia Pacific Games that ended last week in Newcastle, Australia. The eight athletes are expected tp return to Tonga early Tuesday morning, Dcember 10. A celebratory march will be held in Nuku'alofa, organised by a Special Olympics Committee leaving from the Tonga Red Cross Offices on Hala Taufa'ahau at 9:00am. A program will be held at the Digicel Christmas Tree Square at 10:00am.

HRH Prince Mired Bin Raad Al-Hussein of Jordan, during a welcome from Tonga's Red Cross in Nuku'alofa yesterday, said that he looked forward to Tonga supporting a humanitarian cause that aims at saving lives and bettering the lives of people who have been injured and suffered from a terrible weapon - land mines.

After the tsunami of September 30, it is possible there will be a drought in Niuatputapu, during the coming months, said Sione Talifolau Lihau, a Tonga Red Cross volunteer, who returned to Nuku'aofa last Friday, 23 October, after spending three weeks on the island.

Responding to an appeal for drinking water and blankets in the tsunami devastated island of Niuatoputapu, Air New Zealand in Nuku'alofa this afternoon handed over a shipment of bottled mineral water, blankets and overnight kits to the Tonga Red Cross.
