I fully understand the democratic system where one is presumed innocent until proven guilty. However, it is no difference from telling a criminal, "you have been found guilty . . . but while your appeal is pending, we are promoting you . . ." This is most embarrassing coming from a country that brags of having the most educated population per capita in the Pacific if not in the world. When will we ever learn? Mafi 'o Amerika Samoa.

We are living in a society that has became increasingly lower in calories, both in food as in thought. Not only have we passed from the stew and a good plate of beans to the salad slightly seasoned but we have also created rules that subordinate the personal decision to a government dictatorship. We have gone from thinking and reading to watch captivated the small screen. Models are copied more than following ideas. - Agustín Pérez.

Each time I witnessed the late Queen Salote Tupou III and King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV attired in traditional ta'ovala reserved for royalties, they ignited a special pride feeling in me of being proud to be a Tongan. - Sione Akemeihakau Mokofisi.

According to a "Biography of Queen Salote" written by the daughter of Rev. Wood, 'Atalanga is a private and a summer home of Queen Salote. This property was purchased by the government as a property and/or a gift for Queen Salote. Queen Salote used this property as a home when the summer is too hot in Tonga. - Siosaia Fatani.

The Parliamentarians' action reflected Tongan men's attitude towards women: "a bastion of male chauvinism." The law discriminates against women, Christian belief praises men to rule over women, and our culture plays lip service to injustices against women in our society. - Sione Akemeihakau Mokofisi.

The discovery of Foa petroglyphs reminds us of the prolong regional inter- and intra-migration between the West and East of Oceania, and North and South, in a complex and pluralistic nature of opposite and reversible directions since the arrival of our Moanan ancestors from South-East Asia prior to the Birth of Christ (Vikings of the South Seas). Such Vikings were travelling back and forth between islands, even further to the South of the New World and islands like Tikopia to the North-West, at any time they wanted, for whatever purposes they might be, due to their familiarity in skills and wisdom with the know-how to adapt to nature and the sea in secure and safe strategies.

On the question of: do you think that sexual violence against women or just violence against women is a cultural thing? My answer is that it all depends on where you sit and how much you unquestioningly agree with / support the existing culture. People have been using culture, tradition and religion for many moons to justify why we should NOT talk about THE sensitive subjects that we need to talk about if we are going to be successful in preventing the spread of HIV.

When you acknowledge the less than perfect parts of yourself, something magical begins to happen. Along with the negative, you'll also begin to notice the positive, the wonderful aspects of yourself that you may not have given yourself credit for, or perhaps even been aware of. - Siosaia Moimoiangaha

This forum has been a source of inspirational and stimulating discussions that added scholarly and intellectual dimensions to the journalism of Matangi Tonga. The concern of Sefita was well-founded. I waited to see if one of our Tongan linguists would care to respond. The structure of our Tongan language has more implications than just "ranking".

Tongans think differently, and their spiral thought is often seen as "scatter head thinking" by linear thinkers, leading to cultural differences and misunderstanding between the Tongans and palangis, the 11th Tonga History Conference in Melbourne was told by keynote speaker, Rev.
