Nuku'alofa, Tonga
The first early warning and hazard-ready mobile application for Tonga was launched yesterday, 27 August, by Tonga Meteorology Service, on the side of the Pacific Islands Forum leaders meeting in Nuku'alofa. The app provides early disaster warning information and can also report events as they happen in Tonga.

It comes as no surprise that cyclones are forming outside of the normal tropical cyclone season, as a result of El Niño, Tonga’s Director of Meteorology, ‘Ofa Fa’anunu told Matangi Tonga this morning. As President of the World Meteorology Organisation (WMO) Region V, 'Ofa said that Severe Tropical Cyclone Lola that hit Vanuatu this week, marked an early beginning for the 2023/24 tropical cyclone season in the South West Pacific.

A new technologically-advanced tide gauge station was officially commissioned at the Tanoa Hotel on 16 October 2018 by the Prime Minister Hon ‘Akilisi Pohiva and unveiled at Vuna Wharf by the Minister for Internal Affairs, Hon Losaline Ma’asi on his behalf.
