A ceremonial flag raising was held this morning to open the first United States of America Embassy in Tonga in a historical event, held at the National Reserve Bank Building in Nuku’alofa. However, after the flag was raised it was lowered to fly at half mast today in respect of lives lost in a recent Texas mall shooting attack.

Assessments have begun for the building of a dialysis centre in Nuku’alofa, with a ground breaking ceremony planned for the end of the year, the Prime Minister, Hon. Hu’akavameiliku, said on 20 October, in Nuku'alofa. It will go hand in hand with education for Tongans on the importance of healthy diets, in an effort to combat the crippling effects of diabetes on the community.

Combating human trafficking in the Pacific islands was the focus of a three day regional workshop held from April 23-25 in Nadi, Fiji. The workshop was organised by the United States Embassy based in Suva who invited the participation of 27 legal officials, prosecutors, customs and immigration officers from Tonga, the Cook Islands, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu.

Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, earlier today (13 Oct), following her arrival in Fiji to be the United States Ambassador to the Republic of Fiji. Ambassador Reed will serve concurrently as Ambassador to the Republic of Kiribati, the Republic of Nauru, the Kingdom of Tonga, and Tuvalu.
