Two ancient turtles thought to be 150-170 years old were rescued from a certain slow death on the Nuku'alofa waterfront yesterday morning by local conservationists who saw their plight and rallied local businesses for support to save them.

Lui Bell, the Marine Species Officer with SPREP has returned from Tuvalu where he began the initial process of developing a marine turtle conservation (monitoring) programme for the small island nation. This falls in line with SPREP's regional Marine Turtle Action Plan 2003-07.

Thursday, April 14, 2005 - 11:26 Turtle meat as a delicacy is becoming very popular again, not only on the outer islands of Tonga but also on the main island of Tongatapu. These turtles were pictured at Ha'afeva, Ha'apai, last week as they were being loaded onto the MV Pulupaki for shipment to consumers in Ma'ufanga and Puke on Tongatapu.
