Home invasion accompanied by sexual offending is not uncommon in Tonga possibly as a consequence of the limited security many homes have, a Supreme Court judge said when sentencing Paneti Sa (18) to five-years imprisonment for the predatory and callous crime when he raped a 27-year-old pregnant woman in her own home in Tongatapu, last year.

A teenager has died after remaining in a coma for over a week after suffering a violent attack in the Nuku'alofa Central Business District on the night of July 9. Ten male accused, some of them teenagers, were arrested over the weekend and charged with manslaughter in the death of ‘Alani Fuapau (19) whom they allegedly beat and stomped on in Taufa'ahau Road.

A 46-year-old Tongan man living in California was among 112 people (100 men, 12 women) arrested in an operation by United States law enforcement last week. According to the U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E), the four-day operation was targeting “convicted criminal aliens” and that “the arrested were immigrants who were involved in gang activity or had three or more misdemeanor convictions or a conviction for a ‘significant’ misdemeanor'.”
