Calling the Ashika an old "rust bucket", Lord Dalgety QC yesterday told the Royal Commission of Inquiry into the sinking of the ferry that the Minister of Transport's submission was totally and utterly incorrect in stating that Dalgety had revised a Memorandum of Agreement for the FJD$600,000 purchase of the vessel.

There were 128 persons on board the Princess Ashika when it left Nuku'alofa on its August 5 voyage, Operation Ashika confirmed on August 19. These have been established as: 54 rescued, 2 bodies recovered, 72 missing persons (68 passengers and 4 crew).

The people of Pangai who went out to sea in their boats in the dark and worked all night to rescue about 450 passengers from Tonga's grounded inter-island ferry MV Pulupaki yesterday deserve the highest praise, says one grateful passenger who finally reached her destination safely.

About 450 people were rescued in small boats, after Tonga's inter-island ferry ran aground on the Hakauloa reef in the early hours of Wednesday morning, about a mile outside the Pangai Harbour in the Ha'apai group.
