A group of students from Cornell University, an Ivy League research university in Ithaca, New York, were in Nuku’alofa last week to look at the impact of climate change in Tonga as part of their workshop focusing on the Pacific.

Summer rainfall in Tonga is expected to be severely diminished with only half the expected monthly rainfall in some places, Tonga's Meteorological director warned today, after assessing the latest El Niño forecasts which show El Niño this year is the strongest since the 1997-98 events which caused severe drought and a cyclone.

An Asian Development Bank report noted that Tonga, a country of about 176 islands, is one of the most vulnerable countries in the Pacific to climate change, and that the ADB is supporting the Tongan Government's efforts to build up the country’s resilience to natural disasters and assisting with its renewable energy goals.
