Tonga’s Cabinet has ordered the cancellation of Tonga’s hosting of the 2019 Pacific Games today as the contract was between government and the Pacific Games Council. They stated that the reason for cancelling the hosting of the Games in Tonga is based on an old IMF Report in 2013 where it is reported that Tonga’s deficit will widen considerably.

Tongan athletes may still compete in the Rio De Janeiro Olympic, even if Tonga is suspended from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Dr Robin Mitchell, President of the Oceania National Olympic Committees said yesterday, 5 February in Nuku’alofa. The Tongan athletes would, however, be parading under the IOC flag and not under the Tongan flag.

The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Mr Jacques Rogge, and his wife, Anne, will visit Tonga from October 25-27, 2011, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Tonga Amateur Sports Association. Tonga remains the only Pacific Island to have won a medal at the Olympic Games, a Silver Medal in boxing, at the Atlanta Olympic 1996 by Paea Wolfgramm, in the Super-heavy weight division. In 1984 TASANOC became a member of the International Olympic Committee.
