King Tupou VI told the United Nations yesterday that Tonga strongly believes it can achieve 50 percent renewable energy by its 2020 target. In his speech addressing the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the King also warned that climate change continues to pose significant security threats to island states.

Over US$100M in micro loans has been handed out to tens of thousands of low-Income women across the Pacific Islands, including Tonga, by the South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) since its launch in 2000. Last Friday, 8 December, it gave out its US$100 millionth loan to entrepreneur Vilisi Tabua, a fish dealer at the Suva Public Market in Fiji.
