A popular picnic and swimming beach in the capital was this morning found contaminated with fresh offal – apparently the remains of a large animal that had been butchered, either at the site or elsewhere and dumped on the foreshore.

“If someone's behaving suspiciously, being disorderly and drinking alcohol when they are clearly underage, we want to hear about it,” said Acting Police Commissioner Viliami Unga Fa'aoa today. During "Operation Vi", an annual operation to ensure public safety, Police have registered 550 crimes and arrested 159 people.

Tonga's King in Council has repealed the Emergency Powers Regulations 2007 and replaced them with new Emergency Powers (Public Safety and Public Order) Regulations 2008, effective from September 5 for 30 days, over an extended area of the capital Nuku'alofa.
