Pacific Island Forum Leaders made a commitment to be Climate Leaders when they adopted the Majuro Declaration for Climate Leadership in Majuro, Marshall Islands early this month, 5 September. The Declaration will be presented by the Chair of the Pacific Forum to the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Last week's Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) leaders' summit, held in the northern Australian city of Cairns, saw the Labor government of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd move to extend its control over the regional body. Despite earlier statements from a number of Pacific governments expressing disquiet over Canberra's stance on issues including Fiji, climate change, and regional trade, every PIF member state toed the line and signed the final summit communiqué drafted by the Australian government. -By Frank Gaglioti

The Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum, Greg Urwin, said that the position of the Prime Minister of Fiji Qarase as the Chairman of the Pacific Forum is under consideration. Speaking in Suva on December 15, the Secretary General also expressed his deep regret on the over-throwing of Prime Minister Qarase's democratically elected government of Fiji by Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama, the Commander of the Royal Fijian Military Force.
