A special shipment carrying 50,000 litres of petroleum - enough for one day’s supply on Tongatapu - is expected to arrive in Nuku’alofa on Wednesday - a day ahead of Thursday’s General Election - and bring relief to a severe shortage of petrol that has fettered the capital for the last week. The Prime Minister Hon. Dr 'Aisake Eke said Tonga's two main suppliers, TotalEnergies and Pacific Energy, were collaborating on distribution efforts to ease queues at service stations.

Amid a continuing fuel crisis in Tonga's northern islands of Vava'u, where petrol shortages have continued for weeks, the government issued a statement today telling consumers that the supply disruption for petrol in Vava'u "is directly due to delays experienced by Pacific Energy in its replacement of the normal Local Costal Tanker with a bigger vessel."
