Australia is about to launch a new visa that will for the first time create a Pacific quota in Australia’s permanent migration regime. 3,000 visas will be issued every year for the Pacific Islands and Timor-Leste. It’s a huge opportunity yet awareness of this new visa is low. By Stephen Howes and Athualla Rasheed.

Some fear that this year’s United Nations Climate Change Conference – to be held here in Egypt on November 6-18 – will be an unintended casualty of the geopolitical tensions and economic challenges the world is facing. I believe the opposite: COP27 represents a unique and timely opportunity for the world to come together, recognize our common interests, and restore multilateral cooperation. As daunting as this challenge is, we have no choice but to confront it. We must negotiate with one another, because there can be no negotiating with the climate. The people of Tonga need to take the PM to task and hold both him and his government accountable for such a blatant disregard of his own laws and policies...The PM’s Popua project already is a disaster and will take on monstrous proportions, if it is allowed to progress...this governing body acts senselessly and carelessly, endangering the lives of the people with their poor decisions.
