Unfortunately, few agricultural workers are in a position to advocate for their rights. Seasonal and rural workers lack access to collective bargaining, and undocumented migrant workers avoid unions for fear that employers will retaliate by calling the immigration authorities. The Pacific is highly vulnerable to human trafficking, especially where developing countries have poor social and economic systems, high rates of poverty, under-resourced judiciary and government agencies, and inadequate laws, said Patricia Kailola at the 2016 Pacific Update Conference at the University of the South Pacific in Laucala yesterday.
