The ‘Kirisame’, Japan's Maritime Self-Defence Force Destroyer was in Nuku'alofa over the weekend, on its Indo-Pacific Deployment 2022, aimed to strengthen cooperation with partners, including the Tonga Navy. Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala toured the destroyer on 20 August at Vuna Wharf.

The Government of Japan has committed three grant aid projects aimed to improve the waste management and water supply system, while extending the nationwide early warning system in Tonga. The grant aid projects formalized today, will not only help clean up the rubble and debris after the disaster but also establish better recycling, including scrapped cars. There will also be better water supply systems in the outer islands and the nationwide early warning system project will be completed.

It is shocking because Japan has known almost no political violence for at least a half-century, and because gun ownership in the country is tightly controlled. We are worried about the people of Tonga. We former JICA volunteers created a song to cheer up the Tongan people affected by the January 15 events, and posted it on You Tube. Similarly in Japan 11 years ago. It is said that many years are still needed to care for the victims’ minds and regain the lost daily life. Additional relief supplies from Japan arrived in Nuku'alofa on the OHSUMI defence ship yesterday, Feb. 9, to assist those affected by the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai volcanic eruption and tsunamis. Japanese Ambassador to Tonga, HE Mr Munenaga said this was the first visit by a Japan Maritime Self-Defence ship to Tonga in our history.

A consignment of 36,800 AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine doses, funded by Japan, and provided by COVAX, arrived in Tonga on an AIr New Zealand cargo flight last night, 25 August. "While I sincerely hope that Tonga could maintain its COVID-free society, after fully getting vaccinated, we will have to reconsider our border restrictions so that we could get along with other countries," said the Japanese ambassador to Tonga.
