A contract to start the construction of a new hospital and a three bedroom staff quarter on Niuatoputapu was signed on April 4 2016, with over $2 million funding by the European Union. The project follows the 2009 tsunami that destroyed the hospital, homes, and businesses on the remote island.

Prince Tungi headed a seven-member Tongan delegation in a brief visit to Samoa and American Samoa yesterday, Wednesday October 7 to convey the condolences of Tonga's king and people to the leaders and the people of Samoa and American Samoa for the loss of many lives following last week's tsunami.

Responding to an appeal for drinking water and blankets in the tsunami devastated island of Niuatoputapu, Air New Zealand in Nuku'alofa this afternoon handed over a shipment of bottled mineral water, blankets and overnight kits to the Tonga Red Cross.
