A gale warning, heavy rain warning, and flash flood advisory currently remains in force for all of Tonga land areas today, as a low pressure system moves across Tonga. Significant rainfall and strong to damaging gale-force winds were experienced between 9:00am on Sunday, 11 May, to 7:00am this morning, Tonga Meteorological Services reported. For Tongatapu and 'Eua, gales, thunderstorms and heavy rain are expected tonight.

Severe flooding in Nuku’alofa inundated roads this morning after overnight storms, with gale force winds and exceptional rainfall, toppled trees and brought down power lines on Tongatapu. Forecasters warned that a second line of squally weather would pass over southern Tonga tonight, bringing more rainfall. In less than 24 hours today, Saturday, 'Eua and Fua'amotu recorded more than twice their average monthly rainfall for the whole month of October.

A wet and windy New Year is forecast for Tonga, as a slow moving low pressure system moves over the southern groups. A tropical depression called TD03F has the potential to turn into a Category 1 cyclone.

Tropical Cyclone Victor (cat. 2) is forecast to bring damaging gale force winds of 65-75kph, squally seas and thunderstorms this evening to southern Tongan islands, according to the latest Tropical Cyclone Advisory #12 issued by the Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre at 1:30pm Friday 22 January 2016. The centre of the cyclone is expected to lie about 150km southeast of 'Eua at 7:00pm.
