Heads of Diplomatic Missions from all Commonwealth countries, including Tonga, joined Royal guests and representatives at Westminster Abbey to celebrate the Commonwealth Family earlier this week. This year was the first time Tonga had two flag-bearers, Laumanu Mafi, a Chevening Scholar who carried the flag of the Kingdom of Tonga, and John Kautoke, a Law graduate in London who carried the flag of the Independent State of Samoa.

The Tongan Pavilion at Dubai Expo 2020, a multi-million dollar facility built with assistance from the government of UAE, was officially handed over to Tonga's Ambassador, ahead of the official opening of the world expo next week. The theme of the pavilion ‘One Planet for All’ aims to shed light on the dangers of plastic waste to the ocean, its inhabitants and the subsequent challenges faced by the Pacific people.

This is the first Diplomatic Week held since January 2020, when COVID-19 impacted international travel restricting ambassadorial visits to Tonga.

Tonga has joined the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), becoming its 84th member at an official flag raising ceremony held at the AIIB headquarter in Beijing, China, on 5 February. The AIIB was established in 2016 with $100 billion capital. It was created with the purpose of serving as a regional financing tool for Chinese President Xi Jinping’s “One Belt, One Road” initiative.
