As the march toward Brexit – formally set for the end of next March – proceeds, fundamental questions about the nature of the future UK-EU relationship remain unanswered. As the reality of Brexit sinks in, members of Britain’s cabinet and leading Brexiteers have turned on one another, while attempting to cast blame on everyone but themselves. The European Commission today announced that it will be contributing €300 000 ($790,860 Pa’anga) in humanitarian funding to assist Tongans in their recovery from Cyclone Gita. The EU declared that the aid would focus on “…addressing the most pressing needs of the affected families through the provision of emergency shelter, access to safe drinking water, and food and livelihood assistance.”

A contract to start the construction of a new hospital and a three bedroom staff quarter on Niuatoputapu was signed on April 4 2016, with over $2 million funding by the European Union. The project follows the 2009 tsunami that destroyed the hospital, homes, and businesses on the remote island.
