A third death from Dengue Fever in Tonga was reported by the Ministry of Health today. An eight year old boy from Tongatapu is the latest victim of the virus that is spread by mosquitoes. All District Officers on Tongatapu were called to a meeting of the Ministry of Health today. From next week onwards they will start village inspections and a cleanup campaign targeting mosquito breeding sites. Most cases came from Ma'ufanga – including Houmakelikao, Popua, and Fangaloto. If the situation worsens the Minister of Health will declare this an emergency and mass gatherings may be restricted.

Two deaths from dengue fever at Vaiola Hospital last week, were confirmed by the Minister of Health, Dr. 'Ana 'Akau'ola. The deaths of a seven-month-old baby and a 19-year-old girl, were the first in the current outbreak that has seen nearly 600 cases recorded since February, throughout Tonga. “Given these deaths, we are questioning about the potential presence of dengue Type 3 here," she said this morning.

The Ha'apai and Niuas groups remain dengue free as cases rise in Vava'u, Tongatapu, and ‘Eua. Today, the Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 21 new cases with positive rapid test, bringing up the total cumulative dengue fever (DF) cases to 215, with 113 cases in Vava'u, 71 cases in Tongatapu, and 31 cases in ‘Eua. Community clean-ups are underway to reduce mosquito breeding sites.

Meanwhile, ongoing response activities to hot spot and high risk areas are carried out, including collaboration with Tonga Red Cross Society (TRCS) in distributing mosquito nets and DF brochures to affected families, communities and schools.

Ten cases of dengue fever have been confirmed in Tonga in the last week and are likely to increase, the Minister for Health, Hon. Dr ‘Ana ‘Akau’ola, said this morning. She urged the community to take precautions to eliminate the mosquitos that spread the disease. The cases were found in Tongatapu, Vava'u and 'Eua since 13 February. "The limited supply of chemicals has prevented spraying in schools at this time," she said.

A dengue outbreak has been declared in Tonga. One girl (12) has died, with 19 confirmed cases across Tongatapu. The girl from New Zealand who died on 24 January at Vaiola Hospital was visiting family over the Christmas holidays when she caught dengue.

He advised the public to become more vigilant in prevention efforts, while the weather is warm. Tonga's near neighbour, Fiji, is currently facing its worst outbreak of dengue in 16-years with eight reported to have died there since February 28.
