Tonga has signed up with Australia to share Cyber Security information in order to be able to manage cyber threats and vulnerabilities for businesses and the Tongan community, such as online scams, banking fraud and identity theft.

The arrival of high-speed Internet to the Pacific continues to bring opportunities such as business growth and job creation, but it also brings malicious cyber actors who can target victims in the region. This week, Tonga is the centre of a cybercrime workshop as senior officials from 13 Pacific island countries meet from 23 – 25 May.

Tonga has become the 55th Party to the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime Treaty, allowing for effective international cooperation on cybercrime and electronic evidence.

A four-man technical team known as CERT (or the Tonga National Computer Emergency Response Team) was launched by government on 15 July as a step toward enforcing the new Communications Act 2015 and the Communications Commission Act 2015 that were passed by Parliament last year, to guard Tonga from the dark side of the internet.
