The new COVID-19 variant BA.5 has been confirmed in Tonga, after the re-opening of our border on 1 August, CEO of the Ministry of Health, Dr Siale 'Akau'ola said.

There were 941 active COVID-19 cases recorded in Tonga, at 10 May, with the majority (479) located on Tongatapu. Since Sunday, May 8, new cases have dropped to under 50 daily.

Ha’apai has 18 positive COVID-19 cases in the community, recorded on Saturday, April 2, the Minister for Health, Hon. Dr Saia Piukala said today. To date nationally, nine people have died due to COVID-19 and another seven from co-morbidities. Some active cases in Tonga remain “moderately severe”. Public Health nurses are going out to reach around 20,000 people who have not yet had their vaccine booster shots. By Eleanor Gee.

Three cabinet ministers have tested positive for COVID-19, in addition to the Prime Minister who tested positive on Saturday. The Minister for Health, Hon Dr Saia Piukala confirmed today he is also in self-isolation for 10 days but has tested negative so far for COVID-19.
