Tonga is among seven Pacific Island Countries, facing strong headwinds from COVID-19, that will see significant declines in their GDP growth reported for 2020, says a new World Bank report. Recovery in 2021 remains uncertain.

Businesses and workers are finding it hard to repay loans in the CoViD-19 economic downturn. A national rapid assessment on the impact CoViD-19 is having on businesses and employment will run from 10 August until 7 September, the Tonga National Tripartite Committee (TNTC) announced today.

As the impact of COVID-19 continues to be felt, 93% of Pacific businesses reported that not knowing how long the crisis will last is their main challenge. In Tonga 47% of businesses surveyed said they were not very confident in business survival after CoViD-19. Another 33% said they were somewhat confident, but only 20% of businesses in Tonga were very confident that their business would survive the CoViD- 19 crisis.

Around 48% of businesses surveyed in Pacific Island countries, including Tonga, expect to start returning to business as usual in 2021 or later, according to the Pacific Trade Investment (PTI). Meanwhile 50% of businesses surveyed in Tonga are confident of surviving after CoViD-19.
