A 50-year-old Tongan man in Gisborne, New Zealand was sentenced to 140 hours of community work by the Gisborne District Court after he pleaded guilty to assaulting his son with a kafa (taovala belt) for refusing to read the bible.

The Tonga Police are investigating evidence of a brutal beating of young male students by another male student, said to be a prefect, in a corporal punishment rite captured on a grainy video that was posted on the internet You-Tube last week and quickly spread to other webpages.
