Tonga has made an investment in its children by making a commitment to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, the visiting UNICEF Representative to the Pacific Mr Sheldon Yett observed. He attended an event celebrating United Nations Day and the launch of Cyber Safety week at Fa’onelua Convention Centre in Nuku'alofa.

Samoa has committed to protecting children from all forms of sexual exploitation and abuse by ratifying two Optional Protocols of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) last week, UNICEF Pacific in Fiji reported.

In a first global ranking on how effectively children can use the courts to defend their rights, Tonga was ranked 165 out 197 countries worldwide, a low standing attributed to not having a separate juvenile court or system for children and limited implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child. In the report released on 15 February, war-torn countries like Syria, Serbia and Cameroon were ranked higher than Tonga.
