Chinese diplomats in the Pacific are critical of a decision by the Japanese government to dispose of nuclear-contaminated water from the Fukushima nuclear plant accident by discharging it into the sea. They rejected the conclusions of a report of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) on 4 July.

I read with interest Pesi's recent editorial on the dysfunction of government; the system does not work for a variety of reasons. I wonder how much of this is related to traditional socio-cultural issues. Also interesting was the recent article on Tongans educated in China. But from my foreign perspective, there appear to be immensely larger issues. - Richard Stoll.

Visiting Tonga tomorrow, 31 May and 1 June, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Mr Wang Yi will sign cooperation documents on disaster prevention and mitigation, people's livelihoods and other matters, the Chinese Embassy in Tonga announced today.
