The women's basketball team, clinched their inaugural Pacific Games victory with just six players on the court, on Tuesday, 21 November, in pool play, but was later defeated by Fiji in the quarter-finals. Meanwhile, in a Men's Basketball showdown on Saturday, 18 November, Tonga secured a nail-biting 82-80 victory over New Caledonia.

The sports world is mourning the passing of the late basketball great, Kobe Bryant (41), who is credited for his efforts in boosting the popularity of Basketball around the world. The LA Laker super star and his 13-year-old daughter Gianna, were among nine people killed in a helicopter crash in California, on Sunday 26 January. Tributes flowed from a few high profile Tongan athletes who were lucky enough to be acquainted with Bryant.
