Australia pledges $50,000 for cyclone relief

Australia will provide an initial $50,000 (AUD) in emergency supplies to assist the Government of Tonga to respond to the needs of people affected by Cyclone Ian, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop announced on Tuesday.

Australia can do better
Australia can do better. $50k donation is welcome but as an Australian tax payer I am disappointed with the amount. Tonga is Australia’s neighbour and we have many people from Tonga and Tongan decent in Australia. It's good but I don't think it good enough.

I can not agree any less than that comment above, Australia can do more than the $50,000 it has offered for the hurricane aid to ha'apai. $50,000 dollars is 1 grain of sand in to the ocean in your budget Mr Tony Abbott. I am sure if this was about protecting drugs from coming to Australia via Tonga, you would put hundreds of thousands in to it and also seek the co-operations of the Tongan government. Come on Tony Abbott's government! Let see realistic aid with a big heart from your government as Austrlian people are!!
