Young athletic talent shines at Inter-Collegiate Sports

Secondary schools students from across Tonga gathered at Teufaiva Stadium for the final day of the 99th Annual Inter-collegiate Sports Competition on Friday, after four days of intense and spirited competition.

Among the standout performers was Mounga Leao of Tonga College ‘Atele, who was named Best Athlete in the Senior Boys division after securing an impressive four gold medals. He was recognised as one of Tonga’s most promising young runners.

Tevita Kolomalu, representing Tupou College Toloa, also delivered a commanding performance in the Open and National Men’s categories. Known for his strength on the track, Kolomalu has already represented Tonga in international competitions.

In the girls’ division, Christina Tukuafu of Tonga High School stood out in the Intermediate Girls field events, dominating both throwing and jumping disciplines. She claimed three gold medals and set new records in all three events, highlighting her athletic ability.

Niulini Moli from Queen Salote College delivered a remarkable performance in the Open Girls category, winning five gold medals and establishing herself as one of the most formidable runners of the competition.

Representatives from the Oceania Athletics Association were present throughout the competition, observing performances and identifying athletes with the potential to represent Tonga in future international events.

Official results awaited

The Tonga Athletics Association, in collaboration with Tonga College ‘Atele, is responsible for compiling the overall medal tally. However, an official table has yet to be released.

A representative from Tonga College ‘Atele confirmed to Matangi Tonga today that a meeting has been scheduled, to discuss the officiall announcement of the medal standings for the 2026 Inter-collegiate sports.

Additional highlights included the announcement of winners in associated competitions promoting health and school spirit.

Tupou College Toloa took out the Tonga Health Zumba Competition, receiving a $2,000 pa’anga cash prize aimed at encouraging healthy lifestyles among students. 

Liahona High School claimed the annual Digicel Cheerleading Competition, with a $5,000 pa’anga prize for their vibrant support and performance.

Miss Tonga Siosi’ana Taumoepeau attended as a special guest, showing her support for young athletes.

HRH Prince Tungi Tuku’aho was the guest of honour.
