The Tonga women’s basketball 3x3 team has qualified for the 3x3 women’s basketball competition at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, to be held in July.

TASANOC Secretary General and CEO, Netina Latu Vea, said Tonga making its debut, as one of 12 nations to secure qualification for the fast-paced event.

“This is an exciting achievement for Tonga and for women’s basketball in our country. The 3x3 format delivers thrilling competition, and our athletes are ready to represent Tonga with pride. Although we are among the nations making their debut in this event, I’m confident our team will rise to the occasion and perform strongly on the world stage.”

Tonga will be joined by fellow Pacific Island debutante Papua New Guinea. Fiji also qualified both their men’s and women’s teams after winning the sport at the Pacific Mini Games in Palau in July 2025.

The remaining qualified nations are Australia, Cayman Islands, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Scotland, Singapore, Uganda, and one European nation yet to be confirmed.

The 3x3 basketball is played by two teams of three athletes on a single hoop, with a 12-second shot clock to maintain constant momentum. Games are limited to 10 minutes or end earlier if a team reaches 21 points, creating a high-energy, quick-fire style of play that highlights speed, skill, and agility.

The dynamic half-court format of 3x3 basketball made its Commonwealth Games debut at Birmingham 2022 and has quickly become one of the most exciting and accessible events in international basketball.
