A new packhouse and processing facility will enable Fakatoumafi Kava, a family-run enterprise in Vava'u, to meet increasing market demand while upholding the highest quality and safety standards.

Fakatoumafi Kava is one of Tonga’s leading kava processors and exporters, and has opened its new packhouse and processing facility in Vava’u on 12 December. Upgrades include stainless-steel pounding machines, mechanised food-grade kava washing machines, improved grading and packing systems, microbial testing capabilities, and technical advisory support from food-safety specialists.

Supported by the Australia- and New Zealand-funded Pacific Horticultural and Agricultural Market Access Plus (PHAMA Plus) program, the initiative focuses on improving food safety systems, modernising processing equipment, and aligning operations with international export requirements.

The facility's opening and the company’s progress toward full HACCP certification celebrate Tonga’s growing leadership in sustainable, export-ready kava production.

The new Packhouse is expected to significantly increase processing capacity, improve product consistency, and open new opportunities in formal markets such as the United States.

The initiative also strengthens the role of women and youth in the kava sector, with the Fakatoumafi family emphasising inclusive employment and training.

PHAMA Plus Tonga Country Manager, Tevita Lautaha, highlighted the importance of the partnership, “This partnership marks a major step toward meeting international food safety standards and opening new market opportunities for Tongan kava,” he said.

Australian High Commission Second Secretary Kelepi Baba acknowledged the significance of the investment for Tonga’s agriculture and export sectors.

“Australia is proud to support Tonga’s efforts to build a modern, competitive and inclusive kava industry. Facilities like this strengthen Tonga’s export readiness, create more opportunities for farmers, and ensure Tongan kava continues to be recognised globally for its quality and safety,” Baba said.

This marks a significant milestone in the company’s journey toward Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) certification and in strengthening Tonga’s position as a regional leader in safe, high-quality kava exports.
