South Pacific Business Development (SPBD) Tonga marked a significant milestone—15 years of dedicated service in the Kingdom of Tonga—with a grand celebration recognizing the remarkable achievements of female entrepreneurs at its Annual Business Women of the Year Awards, held on 20 June 2025, at the Queen Salote Memorial Hall in Nukuʻalofa.
The prestigious awards ceremony honored outstanding SPBD clients from across Tongatapu, with Mrs. Kateni Telefoni of Ha’asini being named SPBD Business Woman of the Year for Tongatapu. She was joined by first runner-up Matila Tupou of Haveluloto and second runner-up Salote ‘Otuafi of Kolofo’ou. In addition to the main awards, accolades were presented across several other categories, including Best Centre Chief, Best Centre Secretary, Best Individual and Group Saver, and Best Centre, reflecting the wide-reaching success of SPBD members.
Women entrepreneurs from Vava’u, Ha’apai, and ‘Eua will be recognized in dedicated ceremonies in their respective island groups in July 2025.
In his keynote address, the Governor of the National Reserve Bank of Tonga, Hon. Tatafu Moeaki, praised the perseverance and achievements of SPBD women. He highlighted their growing influence in Tonga’s economic development and the important role they play in fostering resilience and prosperity within their communities.
The event brought together a distinguished audience, including SPBD Founder and President Mr. Greg Casagrande, representatives from the U.S. Embassy in Tonga, and delegates from financial institutions, businesses, and partner organizations.

The Annual Business Women of the Year Awards celebrate the powerful impact of SPBD’s microfinance initiatives, which provide women with access to microcredit and financial tools to launch and expand small businesses. These ventures not only provide income but also create employment opportunities, improve family livelihoods, and drive broader community development.
“These exceptional women have overcome challenges and built thriving businesses, becoming role models within their communities,” said an SPBD representative. “Their determination and entrepreneurial spirit serve as an inspiration for future generations of women in business.”
The event concluded on a high note, leaving a lasting impression on all in attendance. As SPBD Tonga looks to the future, it reaffirms its mission to empower women through inclusive financial services and support, contributing to Tonga’s ongoing pursuit of sustainable and equitable economic progress.
