119 earthquakes in May

Three earthquakes between magnitudes 6.0 to 6.7 were felt in Tonga during May. They were the largest of 119 earthquakes that happened within our region during the month.

The latest earthquake Bulletin issued by the Tonga Geological Services (TGS) today said the lowest magnitude was 3.4 and highest magnitude was 6.7, out of 119 events.

  • 03 events between magnitudes 6.0 – 6.9,
  • 20 events between magnitudes 5.0 – 5.9,
  • 66 events between magnitudes 4.0 – 4.9,
  • 30 events between 3.0 – 3.9 magnitudes.

Depth: 39 shallow events (depth≤70km) and 80 deep events (depth>70km).

There were only two days in May with no seismic event within our region, said TGS.

Very few of the events were felt in populated areas.

Felt Event for May 2025:

09 May 2025 04:00 am 6.4,  depth 142km, located 167km N of Vava’u Weak shaking

14 May 2025 5:15 am 6.7, depth 280km, located 122 km W of Neiafu, Vava’u Moderate shaking in Tongatapu. It was felt indoors by people at rest.

25 May 2025 11:50 pm 6.0, depth 48km, located 193 km SW of ‘Ohonua, ‘Eua Weak shaking in Tongatapu. It was felt indoors by people at rest

In April there were 126 earthquakes recorded.

Tonga Geological Services issues a monthly Bulletin to inform the public of the earthquake events that occurred within the Tonga region between latitudes of 13.00°S - 26.00°S and longitudes of 170.00°W -178.00°W during the month.
