Pacific Islands Forum members gathered in Suva, Fiji, this week for a Deep-Sea Minerals Technical Meeting, which began on 18 February. The discussions aimed to enhance understanding of deep-sea minerals (DSM) issues, promote greater regional cooperation, and respect differing views and sovereignty.
Tonga’s Minister for Lands, Survey, Planning, and Natural Resources, Hon. Dr. 'Uhilamoelangi Fasi, as the DSM technical meeting Chair, said the talanoa was important.
"We are all aware of the opportunities and challenges that DSM presents. Some see it as a potential driver of economic growth, while others emphasize the need for strong environmental and governance safeguards. This diversity of perspectives is why this technical meeting is so important—it provides us with the space to openly discuss these critical issues before presenting them to our leaders.”
He said this meeting was a crucial step in PIF members' collective efforts to manage deep-sea minerals (DSM) responsibly.
Tonga's CEO for the Ministry of Lands, Mr. Taaniela Kula also attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, a high-level talanoa will be held today, 21 February, with findings from this meeting to be presented to Pacific leaders.
