81 earthquakes for April

During April 2026, a total of 81 earthquakes were recorded within the Tonga region (Figure 1). Most earthquakes recorded during the month were small to moderate in magnitude and occurred at deep depths beneath the earth’s surface. 

Tonga Geological Services monthly earthquake bulletin released today, reports earthquake activity recorded within the Tonga region between latitudes of 13.00°S - 26.00°S and longitudes of 170.00°W - 178.00°W during the period 1 – 30 April 2026.

One felt earthquake was reported felt within the region. On 30 April at 8:39am light shaking was felt by people at rest, from an earthquake located about 66km south of Neiafu, Vava'u, at a depth of 69km.

No damaging earthquakes or tsunami warnings were recorded during the month.

Earthquake Statistics

● Total earthquakes recorded: 81 events (Figure 1).

● Lowest magnitude recorded: 3.3
● Highest magnitude recorded: 6.1
● Magnitude Distribution:
o 1 earthquake between magnitude 6.0 – 6.9
o 22 earthquakes between magnitude 5.0 – 5.9
o 49 earthquakes between magnitude 4.0 – 4.9
o 9 earthquakes between magnitude 3.0 – 3.9

● Depth distribution:

o 18 shallow earthquakes (less than 70km deep)
o 63 deep earthquakes (greater than 70km deep).

A slight decrease in earthquake activity was observed during April compared to the previous two months.
