Cyclone warning cancelled for Tonga

A tropical cyclone warning for Tonga was deactivated at 1:00pm today.

Tonga Met stated that Tropical Cyclone ‘Vaianu’ (Category 2) was located near about 835km southwest of Nuku’alofa, Tongatapu and ‘Eua at 12:00pm this afternoon and the system is moving south at a speed of 6 knots (12km/hr) and further away from Tongan waters. 

“The Tropical Cyclone Warning previously inforce for Tongatapu, ‘Eua, Tele- ki-Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau is now ‘Cancelled’ and the Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre is now De-activated at 1:00pm, Thursday 9 April 2026.”

Severe weather warning

Laitia Fifita, Director for Meteorology stated that a slow moving trough will continue to affect southern Tonga.

“It is also important to note, that all current severe weather warnings for Ha’apai, Tongatapu, ‘Eua, Tele-ki- Tonga and Tele-ki-Tokelau remain in force, due to the active trough that is slow moving over Tonga with associated clouds, heavy rain, strong to gale force winds that will continue to affect these islands divisions in the next 12 hours,” he said.
