Two University of the South Pacific (USP) students from Tonga, first-year student Petina Akolo and post-graduate student Linda Filiai, believe that upskilling their qualifications is the way to achieve their aspirations.
Linda Filiai believes that upskilling her qualifications is the key to further opportunities. Filiai, who graduated from The University of the South Pacific (USP) with a degree majoring in Journalism and International Business Marketing, decided to undertake postgraduate studies to enhance her career prospects.
She is currently undertaking the Postgraduate in Diplomacy and International Affairs programme under the School of Law and Social Sciences (SoLaSS) and commends USP for providing academic opportunities for students in the region.
First-year student Petina Akolo said she had decided in high school to pursue studies at USP to achieve her aspirations.
“I want to venture into a career in weather broadcasting and I believe USP is the perfect place to achieve this,” she shared.
“The Orientation session has made me feel more prepared for campus life and I am excited to begin studies.”
USP Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Pal Ahluwalia encouraged students to persevere throughout their studies.
“At USP, we’re guided by a compelling vision to shape Pacific futures by empowering students, staff, and alumni to become inspirational agents of positive change, leading to innovative, cohesive, resilient, and sustainable communities,” he said.
“Our mission is equally powerful as it means we provide you not only with academic excellence but also with the skills and understanding to tackle the unique challenges and opportunities of our region.”

Campus Director, Dr Robin Havea said USP’s Tonga Campus is a renowned educational institution with a rich history of educating generations of Tongans.
“USP offers programmes tailored to students’ interests and academic aspirations,” Dr Havea said.
“The welfare and campus experience of our students is central to the quality of service we provide at Tonga Campus and our outer centres.”
“We ensure students are provided the necessary academic and peer support to succeed in their face-to-face and distance learning modes.”
“We are committed to fostering a campus culture that celebrates diversity, promotes wellbeing and encourages the exchange of ideas.”
Dr Havea added that students could choose from a wide range of programmes and study on-campus or via distance and flexible learning methods.
“Our goal is to create a space where everyone feels valued and empowered to achieve their best,” he said.
