There is but one China in the world, and the Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China. Taiwan is neither a sovereign state nor a dialogue partner of the Pacific Islands Forum. The content of the 1992 Forum Communiqué involving Taiwan violates the one-China principle, and China opposes this from the very beginning. Now more than 30 years have passed, and the situation in the Pacific region has changed greatly. China has established diplomatic relations with most of Pacific Island Countries. This fully shows that supporting the one-China principle is where the public opinion trends and the arc of history bends. The forum should make changes accordingly, and the content related to Taiwan in the 1992 Forum Communiqué should be reviewed in time.
For many years, the Taiwan authorities have been using the 1992 Forum Communiqué as an excuse to try to show their presence during the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders’ Meeting. This behavior has seriously disrupted the island countries and dialogue partners from focusing on issues that really concern the island countries. It is unpopular and futile.
The Forum Secretariat has released the correct version of the Forum Communiqué, China appreciates this decision.
Editor's Note: Taiwan was formerly a donor partner to Tonga until an agreement with PRC was signed in 1998.
