Tropical Cyclone Zena (Cat. 2) is rapidly moving towards southern Tonga and expected to bringing destructive storm force winds this afternoon to Tongatapu, ‘Eua and Ha’apai. Forecasters expect the storm to lie about 15km south-southeast of Nuku’alofa or 25km northwest of ‘Eua at about 3:00pm today, Thursday 7 April.

Fua’amotu weather station recorded 100.3mm of rain in 24-hours, the highest rainfall dumped on Tongatapu so far this month, during Tropical Depression 15F, which brought gale warnings for Tongatapu and 'Eua last night, and was cancelled as the system moves away from Tonga today.

Gale warnings remain in force for Tongatapu and ‘Eua with a strong wind warning for Vava’u and Ha’apai as Tropical Depression 15F was located about 465km west of Nuku’alofa at 11:00am this morning, 5 April. Forecasters warn that the system could possibly increase to tropical cyclone strength today, bringing squally thunderstorms and heavy rain. The system is moving east-southeast at about 15 km/h and on its current track is expected to lie about 25km west of Nuku'alofa or 60km west-northwest of 'Eua at about 10:00pm this evening.

A strong wind warning with heavy rain advisory is in force for Tongatapu, Vava’u, Ha’apai and ‘Eua as Tropical Depression 15F was located about 890km west-northwest of Nuku’alofa this morning. Near its centre the depression is forecasted to, probably, increase to Tropical Cyclone strength in the next 18-24 hours. Tonga’s Fua’amotu Weather Forecasting Centre at 2:30pm today issued Tropical Cyclone Advisory One for Tonga.

Tropical Cyclone Winston, category 4, was continuing to move west, away from Tonga and Fiji, at 14km per hour (8 knots) after directly hitting Fiji over the weekend with hurricane force winds. The latest Tropical Cyclone Advisory (No. 29) for Tonga on Tropical Cyclone Winston issued by the Fua’amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre at 4.30 pm Friday, 19 February 2016 has downgraded a storm warning to gales for Vava'u, Niuatoputapu, Niuafo’ou and Ha’apai. A strong wind warning remains in force for Tongatapu and ‘Eua.

The very large Tropical Cyclone Winston (Cat. 4) currently has hurricane force winds across its 150kms diameter and the intensifying storm might become a high Cat. 4 – or even Cat. 5, sometime before midday Friday, north of Vava’u, warns Tonga Met. NEMO was meeting this afternoon and may possibly declare a state of emergency for Tonga later today, based on emerging models of the intensifying and dangerous storm.

Tonga’s island groups of Tongatapu, Vava’u, Ha’apai and ‘Eua escaped major damage from Tropical Cyclone Winston as it passed through Tonga yesterday and today, Tuesday, 16 February with winds gusts of 120km. Forecasters warn that the cyclone, now Cat. 3, is intensifying to the north east of Vava'u and may return for another pass through Tonga over the next few days.

A Tonga National Emergency Coordination Centre was activated today in response to Tropical Cyclone Winston, after a meeting was told that Cyclone Winston, category 2 poses a direct threat to Ha’apai and Vava’u, and also that there is a likelihood that the cyclone could turn around after passing Vava’u and head back toward Tongatapu and ‘Eua.

Real Tonga Airlines cancelled its domestic flights today as Tropical Cyclone Winston cat.2 moves toward the north of Tonga. Fiji Airways also cancelled one international flight scheduled for today as the cyclone lay between Fiji and Tonga. Meanwhile, Virigin's international flight arrived at Fua'amotu safely this morning, and Air New Zealand's flight to Tongatapu will also go ahead as scheduled.

A short tremor was felt in Tongatapu tonight at around 4:03 am. The M 5.7 earthquake rattled houses and woke people, who stayed indoors sheltering from the gale force winds and heavy rains brought to Tonga overnight by Tropical Cyclone Winston - an unusual cyclone that is worrying weather experts because it is moving north.

As Tongans welcome drought-breaking rains today, bringing relief from a February heatwave, Tonga Met warns that Tonga can expect gales tonight as Tropical Cyclone Winston cat. 2 approaches Tonga from the southwest. The first Tropical Cyclone Warning for TC Winston was issued at 4:30pm this afternoon and a second at 7:30pm for the cyclone that is forecast to hang around in Tongan waters for most of the week.

Tropical Cyclone Victor (cat. 2) is forecast to bring damaging gale force winds of 65-75kph, squally seas and thunderstorms this evening to southern Tongan islands, according to the latest Tropical Cyclone Advisory #12 issued by the Fua'amotu Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre at 1:30pm Friday 22 January 2016. The centre of the cyclone is expected to lie about 150km southeast of 'Eua at 7:00pm.

A Tropical Cyclone Warning remains in force for Ha'apai, Tongatapu and ‘Eua as Severe Tropical Cyclone Victor (cat. 3) moves through southern Tongan waters. On its current track, Victor is expected to lie about 365km east of ‘Eua about midnight tonight. Fua'amotu TCWC forecasts south to southwest winds 45-55km/hr increasing to gale force winds of 75km/h and momentary gusts to 100km/hr in the next 18 to 24 hours, according to their advisory no. 5 issued at 4:10pm
