A project to strengthen the Tonga government in the planning and coordination of the reconstruction of Nuku'alofa's CBD as well as some urgent urban environmental interventions is supported with a new European Union grant worth about $4.6 million pa'anga.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Defence concluded the Financing Agreement for the Technical Cooperation Facility which will provide funds of Euro 500,000 (around TOP$ 1.4 million) by the European Commission (EC) to facilitate the implementation of the EC funded projects in Tonga.

The Government of Tonga is hot in pursuit of a $100 million pa'anga loan from China for the reconstruction of its capital Nuku'alofa.

The Australian Government has this morning given Tonga funds for projects to build new rainwater tanks at Patangata village, to provide a new water supply system for Hihifo, and for protecting the coastline on Lifuka Island.

A new town plan for the Nuku'alofa Central Business Area is expected to be complete by March before reconstruction work starts in April, said the Hon. Paul Karalus, the Minister for Transport, and a member of the Government Reconstruction Committee, today.
